HOW
YOU CAN HELP Scripps Institution of Oceanography relies on private
gifts to support its scientific endeavors. Whatever amount you can give
and whatever aspect of Scripps science you choose to support, your gift
will truly make a difference.
Scripps receives less than 15 percent of its support
from the state of California. It must rely on private gifts for new faculty
positions, new buildings, new student fellowships, seed funding for new
research projects, endowments, and matching funds to secure federal research
grants. In addition, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps receives no state appropriation.
It must supplement income from admissions and rentals with gift income
to support educational outreach to schools, develop new exhibits, and
create new programs.
FELLOWSHIPS Supporting students, especially during their critical
first year of graduate study, is one of the top priorities at Scripps.
Support is also needed for postdoctoral fellows. Your contribution to
fellowships will help train the next generation of scientific leaders.
ENDOWMENTS Endowments are forever. They provide invaluable
support for fellowships, endowed chairs, and seed funds to encourage daring
research. They are an important tool for recruiting young faculty.
LIFE INCOME GIFTS Life income gifts offer an opportunity to support
Scripps and, at the same time, provide income for the donor and/or a loved
one. Such gifts may provide increased income, charitable income tax deductions,
and estate tax savings. Cash or appreciated assets such as real estate
or securities may be used to fund life income gifts. Appreciated assets
contributed through life income gifts may also generate capital gains
tax savings. Scripps can provide illustrations of the tax and financial
benefits of life income gifts, at your request.
BEQUESTS
Charitable bequests through wills and trusts are an easy way for individuals
to support Scripps. If you have specific interests or questions, the Scripps
Development Office can provide appropriate language for review by your
attorney.
SCRIPPS OCEANOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Scripps Oceanographic Society (SOS) members support
Scripps's research and education programs. Benefits include free admission
to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps and copies of Explorations magazine and
OnBoard, the members only newsletter, as well as discounts on purchases
and educational programs. To join the adventure please call the Membership
Office at 858-534-5771.
E. W. SCRIPPS ASSOCIATES E.W. Scripps Associates (EWSA) are annual donors
who have a special interest in the scientific process and the scientists
who work at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UCSD. Founded
in 1993, the group was named in honor of pioneer newspaper publisher,
E.W. Scripps, who made the first gift to SIO, a $1,000 contribution that
enabled the purchase of 170 acres in La Jolla for expansion of the Institution.
Since its founding, E.W. Scripps Associates memberships
have funded a wide variety of projects at Scripps: from graduate fellowships,
to seed money to support innovative research, to scholarships for students
to attend Aquarium classes. This support is extraordinarily important
because of its flexibility.
The most significant benefit of EWSA membership is the
personal satisfaction gained by helping SIO maintain its high standards
of service to students and the community, and by investing in innovative
research programs. E.W. Scripps Associates enjoy many membership privileges.
We invite you to join us!
